August will never be King.

Season three isn’t out yet, but whatever happens – even if it makes you grip your couch cushion and chew through your bottom lip in suspense, even if it pretends, for a while, that all is lost for Wilhelm and August will gain the upper hand and be crowned King – know this: He won’t. Because he can’t! Narrative-wise. Big-picture-wise.

There is exactly zero reason to be afraid that things won’t sort themselves out come the finale, no matter how dark the story might seem in the meantime: August will not win.

Because the subtext forbids it!

And subtextually, this has everything to do with Simon’s secret (and so far hidden) backstory, that we all suspect will come to light in season three, and the (so far) nameless and faceless dark character we have dubbed ‘Person X’ on this blog.

It is also very much connected to the question of why Felice’s last name is ‘Ehrencrona’ and why August’s name is ‘August’, what Simon’s backstory means when mirrored onto the fate of the nation and, most importantly, who Simon actually represents in a big-picture-analysis reading of the show.

Shall we take a quick look at all of these questions?
